Following a sudden rise in water level and flooding of Teesta River Basin, affecting low lying areas, Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, visited the affected areas in Singtam this morning and took stock of the situation. While all the emergency services are deployed for evacuation, the Chief Minister met the people of Singtam Bazar and Golitar areas and met the affected citizens. The Chief Minister urged the people to stay alert and take shelter in safe locations for now. HCM visited the disaster-stricken area in Dikchu to assess the extent of the damages and had meaningful interactions with numerous affected families who have endured significant hardships. As a sign of immediate relief and with the assurance of full government support, each affected family were provided with emergency relief grant of Rs 50,000. HCM conducted an assessment of the disaster-stricken regions in Sirwani. Regrettably, the Sirwani bridge, a critical route linking the eastern, northern, and southern parts of the state, has been completely obliterated, resulting in a profoundly distressing scene. In the final phase, the MI-17 helicopter completed two sorties, transporting 06 labourers, 08 civilians, and 08 police personnel who were on rescue duty. From Pegong, 07 labourers, 09 civilians, and 07 ITBP personnel were safely transported. Furthermore, the Chinook helicopter evacuated 48 labourers from Lachen. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation program aimed at assisting the displaced families. He requested NDMA to embark on a program that would identify alternate land for the affected families, taking into account future safety considerations. Additionally, he implored NDMA to consider the removal of the silt that has accumulated along the shoreline, a factor rendering our inhabited areas more susceptible to future changes or river overflows. Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang today disbursed relief cheques to drivers affected by the recent calamity. It was announced during the programme that the Chief Minister, from his personal savings, has adopted Tuberculosis patients from Namchi and Soreng districts under Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. Cheques of Rupees Three Lakhs each have been sent to the two districts committing support for the TB patients.
